Tyler Jones admits that he Google Map searched Mozambique when he first met Kyle Holton. He’d expect others to do the same for his home in Florence, Alabama, and will actually be living closer to an airport while in Nomba Village. Still, Tyler packs a resource that, if not new in Nomba, will lead to fresh voices from a place often muffled by poverty. He comes to listen—both to the fading of his own preconceptions and to the rich sounds of an Africa that speaks for itself. Somewhere between a Santa Monica city bus and a dorm room at 2 am, the Kujilana Project hatched from a midnight crave for storytelling and his conviction to share the microphone with our neighbors who have been silenced for far too long.
